“The cities told by citizens”: Viareggio (second part)

Welcome to the second part of our blog on the “secrets” of Viareggio, who missed the first one can find it here .
We continue with question/answer with local:

Where can we have a snack when we are suddenly hungry?

Viareggio has a multitude of surprises when we are starved in the middle of the day. The classic par excellence is focaccia with cecina of Rizzieri , considered the best of Versilia without any doubt. Another place for morning and afternoon snacks is pizzeria Rusticanella on the waterfront boulevard , where pizzas of sidereal height will fill you with a minimum expense (focaccia with mozzarella and cooked ham and focaccia with potatoes are highly recommended). On the Viareggio port there is the Barchina fish & fried that fry fish and much more for passers-by all day. The smell and the flavor are so inviting that the wait can be long but always repaid. Finally, those who prefer a sweet snack can go to visit a true icon of Viareggio, ice cream parlor Gattonero. Here in the last 50 years a small hot air balloon named Pippo brings the famous donuts that are filled with a various choice of ice cream flavours.

Are there any places, activities or special places in the city?

In a city of sea and fishermen it is a duty to experience the sea in all its forms. For this task we are helped by two people who have decided to share their love for salt water. The first is Alfo which, with its “Pescatismo Evolution Viareggio” and the help of his wife Marzia and her son Nicolò, is ready to let you live different types of adventures. Excursions, snorkeling, swimming in the sea and the opportunity to experience a special day that involves adults and children in all stages of fishing.
Another beautiful activity is “Tourist fun boat Viareggio” with the kind and competent skipper Giacomo that will make you discover the beauties of our sea. Various types of excursions along our coasts, with the possibility of an aperitif at sunset in the middle of the sea, to experience a moment that you will not forget for the rest of your life.

Where we go when we want to relax outdoors?

Nature with its peace permeates the area of Viareggio and it is nice to find some time for relax. The most popular area is undoubtedly the Lecciona , a beautiful and wild free beach with behind the wooded area of the natural park of Migliarino – San Rossore. Another area to enjoy a nice walk is the famous “muraglione” where we find another free beach that ends on a small cliff on the port of Viareggio. Finally the beautiful “oasi lipu” introduces us to the natural reserve of Lake Massaciuccoli where we can enjoy a trip by boat or canoe.
As you have seen, Viareggio offers many opportunities and experiences to live. The Matilde tower, built in the 16th century, is the hub of the historic center. Do not miss the Maritime Museum where, with an entrance ticket of only € 2, you will discover the fascinating history of divers and Viareggio’s shipbuilding.
